Research and Planning - Pictures For College Magazine

For my college magazine, I needed to take a range of photographs to put on the front cover and in the context page, to make it more exciting as well as intiguing!
Therefore, I have taken the following photo's.

All of these photo's are medium close up's as well as of a student, therefore appropraite for the target audience!

Research and Planning - Audience Interviews And Analysis Of Answers

To create my College Magazine I needed to gain a wider range of information based on my target audience (students) and what they would expect to find in a college magazine. Therefore I created five questions to ask five students, basing my magazine on those questions so that it would be more advertising for them to read!
The Questions that I asked:

  1. What would you expect to find in a college magazine?
  2. What colours would you associate with a college magazine?
  3. Would you rather the font to be either 'Bright & Bold' OR 'Plain & Simple'?
  4. What do you think would make a good name for a college magazine?
  5. Would you rather the contents page to be simple OR busy?
From the results I got back I noticed that all of my responses wanted college related stories in the magazine. Moreover, interviews and music associated topics, such as gigs or interviews with celebrities, was a popular response. Furthermore, when asking the second question, white, blue and red was a common colour suggested.
Additionally, I found out that 3 out of five of the teens I asked would want a bright & bold font on the front cover of the magazine to attract the readers attention, but 4 out of 5 wanted the context page to be fairly simple & plain so it would be easier and quicker to follow.
Moreover, another thing I found out from my questionnaire was the similar answers to question 4; "What do you think would make a good name for a college magazine?"

All of my responses conveyed the idea of a college student and the younger generation. From this i'm going to keep my magazine name fairly simple, as well making it easily associable with a life of a teenage student, therefore attracting my target audience.

Research and Planning - Masthead Practice

In this lesson we were given three different titles to some form of magazine, each with a different genre.
From just these names given, Popcorn, Pop-world and Dead Metal, we had to create a header, choosing certain fonts and colours depending on what type of effect the name gave you.
Below are my final results for each name!

Popcorn ~ When given the name 'Popcorn' I immediantly thought to some sort of cinema/film magazine, as popcorn and be easily asociated with that genre. I therefore went onto pick a bubbly font that reflects that type of genre, as well as picking the colour red as the colour is often used at the cinema's.

Popworld ~ With the word 'Popworld' I immediantly associate it with a modern pop music magazine. From this I created the title with a casual yet bold looking font. Futhermore I chose a light blue for the colour, as it would stand out against a darker background, becoming eye catching to the audience.

Dead Metal ~ From this chosen title I decided to stick with the colour black, reflecting the mood that comes from those words. I also chose a bold, heavy font that catches the viewers attention.

Research and Planning - Indesign Film Review Tutorial

Today I created a page of a film review using the software Indesign.

Opening up Indesign, I made a header for my film review title and applied columns to the page, where I later added the text of my review as well as a picture. I then went onto change the font and colours of the text, finally changing the background of the page so that the colours contrasted against each each other, resulting in the text to stand out more.

Here is my final result:

Research and Planning - Film Poster

In todays lesson I recreated the poster for the film 'The Host' using photoshop, replacing Saoirse Ronan's face with Emma Watson's.

Using a variety of tools on Photoshop, such as the Elliptical Marquee tool, eraser and brush tool, as well as adjusting the contrast and brightness, I helped to blend Emma's face onto the film poster.

Here are the before and after posters of 'The Host', as well as the photograph of Emma Watson that I used:

Research and Planning - Photoshop Challenge

Today we did something called the photoshop challenge which enabled us to get used to using photoshop.

First of all I opened an A4 document into photoshop to work on and then wrote 'AS Media Studies' (size 24) in Century Gothic font.
I changed the colour of the writing into red and placed it in the centre of the page. I also highlighted the text and gave it a drop shadow.
Next I changed the background of the page to blue and placed an image of a person underneath the text.
Then using an air brush changed the colour of the persons hair.
Finally I drew a border around the picture, finishing the photoshop challenge!!

Here is my final outcome:

Research and planning - Drafts Of College Magazine

Here is a draft of a college magazine i made!

On the front page the college name would appear in a bright bold font to catch the readers attention. There would be a picture of two students smiling warmly at the camera to create a friendly atmosphere and make you want to read on. Moreover, there would be cover lines on the front of the magazine so the reader would know what to expect inside.

On the double page spread, I would use bright colours to entice the reader in, as well as that I would use a wide shot photograph of a student. As this double page is called 'Question of University', the photograph of the friendly Uni student would make the reader feel more comfortable and confident in the matter, as the student is portraying a welcoming atmosphere.

On the final page, 'After School Activities', I would continue the theme of using vibrant eye catching colours, as well as a bold header so the reader knows what this page is about. I would also include a picture of three students, smiling and laughing at the camera. This coveys the sense of enjoyment, making the reader wanting to be apart of this school activity!

Research and Planning - Medium Close Up Examples

All of these pictures below are examples of a Medium close up:

Research and Planning - College Magazine Analysis

Here is a front cover of a magazine. Straight away we know who this magazine's target audience is as the word "Student" is written across the top of the page, in bright bold letters!
Moreover, the cover lines give away small examples of what to expect if you read this article, addressing some of the many dilemma's  in which students face, for example "Top 10 ways to help you revise" and the simple word "University".
Another way we can tell that this is a Magazine for a college and its students is by the main picture. By the title "Student" behind her, we assume that the teenager in the photo is a student. Furthermore, she is smiling warmly at the camera, giving off a friendly atmosphere, making us want to pick up the magazine and read!

Research and Planning - Skin Turtorial

In media today i learned how to air brush using photoshop, to help hide blemishes or flaws in our appearance.

Before:

Here is the before picture of our model example which hasn't been tampered with. As you can see she has a few spots and blemishes.

After:

Where as here we have the after picture, in which i have hidden the few blemishes she had using airbrushing in photoshop. Furthermore, i used the brush tool to add make up to her eyes and lips, as well as changing her hair colour, resulting in her looking more model like.
